Introduction

Domus Lighting has supplied lighting products across Australia for more than 50 years. Its customers include electricians, wholesalers, architects and designers, each arriving with different levels of product knowledge and different tasks to complete.

The previous website did not reflect the scale or standing of the business. It also struggled to support technical product discovery, account-based pricing and stock, project planning and day-to-day content management.

I redesigned the experience across public product discovery, technical resources and account tools, working with Emote's development team throughout the build.

Designing around different professional needs

Domus serves several audiences within the same catalogue. Electricians often arrive looking for specifications and compatibility. Architects and designers may begin with inspiration or a particular application. Wholesalers and account customers need accurate pricing, stock and efficient ways to manage repeat work.

I designed a tiered experience that kept the public catalogue useful while giving signed-in customers access to information and tools relevant to their accounts. The interface needed to make these differences clear without creating separate websites for each audience.

Making a technical catalogue easier to use

The product experience needed to support a large catalogue with detailed attributes, variants and technical documents.

Category navigation, product filters and Algolia-powered search helped users move from broad browsing to a specific product. Search results could include products, resources and articles, while product pages brought specifications, available options, downloads and saved-product actions into a consistent structure.

The resource library provided a dedicated route to spec sheets, catalogues and technical documents rather than forcing users to locate them through individual product pages.

Supporting projects, not just individual products

Signed-in customers could save products into projects, organise them by room, invite collaborators and request a quote across the full project.

I designed the account dashboard and project tools as a working space rather than a simple list of favourites. Products could still be saved casually through a wishlist, then organised more deliberately when a customer was planning a real project.

This gave trade customers and specifiers a clearer way to manage selections over time while creating a more useful path from product research to enquiry.

Bringing live business data into the interface

Account pricing and stock availability were connected to Domus's internal systems through a Business Central API. The wider platform also included Algolia search, HubSpot forms, a modular WordPress CMS and tools for connecting products to lifestyle imagery.

My role was to make these systems understandable and consistent within the customer experience. I worked with the development team to define how account states, live data, search, resources and project tools appeared across the interface and responded across devices.

Result

The live website brings product inspiration, technical information and trade functionality into one experience.

Public visitors can explore the catalogue and learn about the range, while account customers can access live information and manage products within real projects. Behind the interface, the content and integration structure gives the Domus team more control over product information, resources and customer access.
